Aruba is located in the Caribbean Sea of the North American Continent, with a population of 107,635, making it the 190th
largest national population. Its capital and largest city is Oranjestad with a total population of 33,000. The country
encompasses 193 square kilometers making it the 214th largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with Caribbean
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through heredity and holds
that position for life or abdication. She is represented by Governor General Fredis Refunjol. Prime Minister Michiel
Godfried "Mike" Eman is recognized as the Head of Government and, along with Vice Prime Minister Mike Eric de Meza ,
achieves that status by election of the unicameral legislature or Staten for a four-year term with no term limits. Its form of
government is a parliamentary democracy and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on the 1st of January 1986.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are Dutch, Papiamento, English and Spanish. It counts among its major
religions Roman Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, Confucian and Jewish. As sources of mass communication it has 2 AM, 16 FM
and 1 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Mount Jamanota, its highest point at 188 meters and Caribbean Sea, its lowest point at 0
meters. Its principal waterway is Caribbean Sea, which measures 68.5 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are tourism, transshipment facilities and oil
refining. Its official currency is Aruban Guilder/ Florin.
Here’s something you may not know about Aruba. Before Aruba became a Tourist destination donkeys served as a primary
source of transportation. Because of the risk from so many cars Aruba has a sanctuary for stray and sick donkeys.
