Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island nation located in the Caribbean Sea of the North American
Continent, with a population of 50,726, making it the 207th largest national population. Its capital and largest city is
Basseterre with a total population of 15,500. The country encompasses 261 square kilometers making it the 206th
largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with Caribbean Sea and The Narrows.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through
heredity and holds that position for life or abdication. She is by represented by Governor General Cuthbert
Montraville Sebastian. Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas is recognized as the Head of Government and, along with
Deputy Prime Minister Terrance Sam Condor, achieves that status following legislative elections, when the leader
of the majority party or leader of a majority coalition is usually appointed prime minister by the governor general. Its
form of government is a parliamentary democracy and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on 19th of
September 1983.
The language commonly or officially spoken is English. It counts among its major religions Anglican, other
Protestant and Roman Catholic. As sources of mass communication it has 3 AM, 3 FM and 1 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Mount Liamuiga, its highest point at 1,186 meters and Caribbean Sea, its lowest
point at 0 meters. Its principal waterway is The Narrows, a three-kilometer wide channel between the islands
connecting to the Caribbean Sea, which measures 135 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are sugar processing, tourism,
cotton, salt, copra, clothing, footwear and beverages. Its official currency is East Caribbean dollar.
