Commonwealth of the Bahamas is located in the Caribbean Island chain of the North American Continent with a population
of 316,182, making it the 178th largest national population. Its capital and largest city is Nassau with a total population of
248,948. The country encompasses 13,940 square kilometers making it the 160th largest country in total area. It shares
boundaries with the North Atlantic Ocean.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through hereditary
and holds that position for life or abdication. She is represented by Governor General Sir Arthur A. Foulkes. Prime Minister
Perry Christie is recognized at the Head of Government and achieves that status following legislative elections, where the
leader of the majority party or the leader of the majority coalition is usually appointed prime minister by the governor
general. Its form of government is Constitutional Parliamentary Democracy and they celebrate the creation of their
constitution on 10 July 1973.
The languages commonly or official spoken are English and Creole. It counts among its major religions Baptist, Anglican,
Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, Church of God, Methodist, Other Christian, None, and Other. As sources of mass
communication it has 3 AM, 5 FM and 2 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Mount Alvernia as its highest point with has an elevation of 36 Meters and Atlantic Ocean
as its lowest point which has an elevation of o Meters. Its principal waterway is Atlantic Ocean with its main port at
Freeport, which measures 3,542 Meters.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are Tourism, Banking, Cement, Oil
Transshipment, Salt, Rum, Aragonite, Pharmaceuticals and Spiral-welded Steel Pipe. Its official currency is Bahamian
Dollar.
