
Republic of Cyprus is located in the Mediterranean Sea of the European Continent, with a population of 1,138,071, making
it the 160th largest national population. Its capital and largest city is Nicosia with a total population of 309,500 (including
both Greek and Turkish sides). The Turkish Cypriot community, which administers the northern part of the island, refers
to itself as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC) The country encompasses 9,250 square kilometers making
it the 168th largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with the Mediterranean Sea.
President Nicos Anastasiades is recognized as the Chief of State and Head of Government and President of the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus is Dervis Eroglu (though only officially recognized by Turkey) and they achieve that status
through popular vote and hold those position for a five year term. The post of vice president is currently vacant as under
the 1960 constitution, the post is reserved for a Turkish Cypriot. İrsen Küçük is "TRNC Prime Minister" and heads the
Council of Ministers (cabinet) in coalition with "Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister" Hüseyin Özgürgün, Its form
of government is a republic and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on 16th of August 1960.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are Greek, Turkish and English. It counts among its major religions Greek
Orthodox, Muslim, Maronite, Armenian Apostolic and other faiths. As sources of mass communication it has 5 (South
Cyprus) and 1 (North Cyprus) AM, 76 (South Cyprus) and 20 (North Cyprus) FM, 0 (South Cyprus) and 1 (North
Cyprus) Short Wave and 8 (South Cyprus) and 2 (North Cyprus) Television stations.
Major geographical features are Mount Olympus, its highest point at 1,951 and Mediterranean Sea, its lowest point at 0
meters. Its principal waterway is Mediterranean Sea, which measures 618 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are tourism, food and beverage, cement
and gypsum production, ship repair and refurbishment, textiles, light chemicals, metal products, wood, paper, stone and
clay products. Its official currencies are Cypriot Pound and Turkish New Lira.
