
Overseas Collectivity of Saint Martin is an island located in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean Sea of the North
American Continent, with a population of 30,959, making it the 216th largest national population. Its capital and largest city
is Marigot, with a total population of 5,700. The country encompasses 54.4 square kilometers making it the 231st largest
country in total area. It shares boundaries with the Caribbean Sea and lies east of the United States Virgin Islands..
President of France Francois Hollande is recognized as the Chief of State achieves that status through popular vote and
holds that position and is eligible for a second term. He is represented by Prefect Philippe Chopin. President of the
Territorial Council Alain Richardson is recognized as the Head of Government and achieves that status by majority vote of
the members of the Council and holds that position for a five-year term. Its form of government is an overseas collectivity
of France and they celebrate the creation of their constitution on the 4 October 1958.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are French (official), English, Dutch, French Patois, Spanish and
Papiamentoh. It counts among its major religions Roman Catholic, Jehovah's Witnesses, Protestant, Hindu. As sources of
mass communication it has 1 local Television station and access to about 20 radio stations, including RFO Guadeloupe
radio broadcasts via repeater.
Major geographical features are Pic du Paradis, its highest point at 424 meters and Caribbean Sea, its lowest point at 0
meters. Its principal waterway is Caribbean Sea, which measures 58.9 kilometers of coastline.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are tourism, light industry, and
manufacturing. Its official currency is the Euro

distilled into rum on the Dutch side and sold throughout the island.
