
Republic of Hungary is located in the center of the European Continent, with a population of 9,958,453, making it the 87th
largest national population. Its capital and largest city is Budapest with a total population of 1,741,041. The country
encompasses 93,028 square kilometers making it the 110th largest country in total area. It shares boundaries with Slovakia,
Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria.
President Janos Ader is recognized as the Chief of State and achieves that status through election of the national assembly and
holds that position for five years and is eligible for a second term. Prime Minister Viktor Orban is recognized as the Head of
Government and achieves that status through election by the National Assembly on the recommendation of the President and
holds that position for five years. Its form of government is a parliamentary democracy and they celebrate the creation of their
constitution on 18 August 1949.
The languages commonly or officially spoken are Hungarian and other and unspecified languages. It counts among its major
religions Roman Catholic, Calvinist, Lutheran, Greek Catholic, other Christian and other, unspecified and unaffiliated faiths. As
sources of mass communication it has 17 AM, 57 FM, 3 Short Wave and 35 Television stations.
Major geographical features are Kekes, its highest point at 1,014 meters and Tisza River, its lowest point at 78 meters. Its
principal waterway is the Danube River, which measures about 1,622 kilometers.
Major industries providing for the bulk of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are mining, metallurgy, construction
materials, processed foods, textiles, chemicals and motor vehicles. Its official currency is Hungarian Forint.
Here’s something you may not know about Hungary. For much of its history, part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire has been
ruled by the Hapsburgs and Budapest was the merger of two towns, Buda and Pest which was populated by people of
different cultures on opposite sides of the Danube River.
